Following your tooth extraction at Aura Dentistry and Spa, it's crucial to allow a blood clot to form in the socket. This natural process stops the bleeding and begins the healing. Immediately after your appointment, bite firmly on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes. If bleeding or oozing continues, replace the gauze with a fresh pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. Repeat this as necessary to control the bleeding.
Once the blood clot has formed, it's vital to protect it. Avoid vigorous rinsing, sucking on straws, smoking, and drinking alcohol for the first 72 hours. Also, be careful when brushing near the extraction site during this time. These actions can dislodge or dissolve the clot, hindering proper healing. For the first 24 hours, refrain from strenuous exercise, as this can elevate blood pressure and potentially cause more bleeding.
It's normal to experience some pain and swelling after your tooth is removed. Applying an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas or corn to the affected area can help minimize swelling. Take any pain medication as prescribed by Dr. Hothi. Typically, swelling will subside within about 48 hours. If your prescribed pain medication doesn't provide adequate relief, please contact our dental office. If antibiotics are prescribed, be sure to complete the entire course, even if you feel better. On the day of your extraction, focus on drinking plenty of fluids and eating nutritious, soft foods. You can gradually return to your normal diet as you feel comfortable.
After the first 24 hours, it's important to resume your regular dental hygiene routine, including brushing and flossing at least once a day, being gentle around the extraction site. This will aid in healing and keep your mouth clean. Within a few days, you should start feeling much better and can typically resume your normal activities. However, if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, swelling that persists or worsens after 2-3 days, or any reaction to your medication, please contact Aura Dentistry and Spa immediately.
